Giving back. Help Miller thrive for generations to come.
The mission of the Miller Area Foundation is to receive and administer charitable gifts creating a permanent endowment to assist a wide range of programs to qualified non-profit organizations, institutions or agencies to promote the social and economic well-being of the people of the Miller and surrounding area. It is the further intent of the Miller Area Foundation to provide the opportunity for any individuals, corporations and estates to return to their community of that which was given to them. It is our intent to continually raise endowment funds so that the earnings may be distributed to the Miller Area Foundation for economic development, human services, education, cultural and environmental enhancement.
The South Dakota Community Foundation officially partnered with the City of Miller in 1994 when the Hand County State Bank made a $125,000 contribution to start the Miller Area Community Foundation. Shortly after, they would receive a challenge from an anonymous donor to raise $100,000 for a match of $50,000. They completed that challenge in less than one day! In 1997, they formally accepted a challenge to raise $100,000 in order to receive a total of $50,000 from the South Dakota Community Foundation and Northwest Area Foundation. Through generous partnerships with Hand County State Bank, community leaders, and local businesses, they reached their goal in less than three years. In 2007, Miller accepted another challenge, this time from Miller resident Richard Joy, to build on this perpetual asset for the community. The task was to raise $75,000 in order to receive a $75,000 match from Mr. Joy along with $25,000 from the South Dakota Community Foundation. The Miller area rallied together to finish this challenge by 2012. While receiving their check at the celebration for this accomplishment, they were offered yet another challenge to bolster the Miller Area Community Foundation. This time, a promise of $100,000 from an individual donor if the community would contribute $100,000! Not surprisingly, the board and all supporters present at the celebration accepted a chance to build on an already great asset for their community.
What could have taken up to five years to complete was finished in less than two. Because of the Coss’s generosity, and their commitment to community, the Miller Area Community Foundation has grown by over $226,493 since February 2013 and is now worth more than $909,000! Total grants given back to Miller and the surrounding area has surpassed $340,000 since inception.

Thanks to our generous supporters and hard working board of directors, the Miller Area Foundation has been able to distribute over $368,000 in grants to the communities since 1997. As this asset goes, so will the amount we are able to give back every year. Thanks to everyone who has made this happen!
