Smart investments, over time.
The SDCF takes great care to responsibly invest the funds donors entrust to us. A committee of nine board members meets regularly throughout the year and focuses on guiding the investment strategy. For every fund, we work to:
- Protect the initial investment.
- Provide a steady stream of income from the fund to support designated charitable causes.
- Grow the fund over time.
How we calculate our rate of return.
Our current 20-year average rate of return is 7.3 percent. Since this is an average, some years will be better and some years will be worse.
The chart below illustrates the rate of return for each of the past 20 years. As you can see, the market has fluctuated significantly in the last two decades, but the overall trend—denoted in orange at the end—has been one of growth.

Remember that no fund is required to distribute its earnings every year. In periods of slow growth, you and your client can choose to support the endowment by reducing or halting grant distributions.
