July 2, 2024 // Grants

South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) recently awarded a $10,000 South Dakota Fund grant to St. Joseph’s Indian School. Funding will aid in modernizing the Recreation Center built in 1975. This will help meet the evolving needs of the students and the community.

“We are deeply grateful to the South Dakota Community Foundation for this generous donation,” said St. Joseph’s Indian School’s President Mike Tyrell. “Our current structure served the students, staff, and staff family members well for the past 50 years. In keeping with the Foundation’s commitment to South Dakota communities, this gift will support not only the improved health and well-being of future students from all around the state, but that of local community members and their families who serve our mission. This gift touches countless lives.”

St. Joseph's Indian School is a Native American school dedicated to improving the quality of life for Lakota (Sioux) children and families. Their mission is to educate Native American children and their families for life - mind, body, heart, and spirit. This mission drives the organization to educate and provide housing for approximately two hundred Lakota (Sioux) children each year. The school has taken a significant step forward by introducing the Health & Family Services Center, offering comprehensive medical care and expert counseling. Recognizing the importance of physical activity in their lives, they have embarked on an expansion and renovation of their Recreation Center.
