The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) recently awarded a $40,000 South Dakota Fund grant to South Dakota Parks & Wildlife Foundation. The grant will be paid over two years to assist with a teaching kitchen for the Outdoor Campus - Sioux Falls expansion.

“Funds awarded toward the Outdoor Campus Sioux Falls Expansion will pave the way for expanded and enhanced educational opportunities. The Outdoor Campus provides a variety of experiential, outdoor education classes that are all free and the addition of this cooking classroom will expand these opportunities,” said Kristina Coby, Director, South Dakota Parks & Wildlife Foundation. “Currently, cooking classes are limited in scope due to space constraints.  However, by reimagining the current area to be a proper teaching kitchen, participants will be able to complete the full circle of hunting or fishing. The space will also help with classes such as “meat canning” as a way to make their game shelf stable and also more tender for later recipes.”

South Dakota Parks & Wildlife Foundation was created in 1985 to develop and enhance wildlife habitat, parks and recreation in partnership with the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish, and Parks. Their mission is to enhance outdoor recreation for future generations and preserve South Dakota’s parks and wildlife. The Outdoor Campus – Sioux Falls began working on its expansion during the summer of 2024. As part of the expansion, the Outdoor Campus – Sioux Falls, will convert two classrooms into a teaching kitchen to help participants understand what happens after the harvest. Field to fork classes will teach participants how to properly and safely prepare their game.

“The teaching kitchen at the Outdoor Campus will offer classes that will not only teach participants what happens after the harvest, but also a chance to learn about sustainable living,” says Ginger Niemann, SDCF Senior Program Officer. “We are proud to partner with South Dakota Parks & Wildlife Foundation.”
