Marci Burdick: A Legacy of Giving and Community Impact

January 22, 2025 // Board of Directors and Staff, Donors

Marci Burdick’s journey began in Deadwood, South Dakota. Her family left South Dakota in her  early childhood but returned to Rapid City as she entered middle school. Her upbringing was shaped by parents who exemplified the power of giving, even on a tight budget. It is from this upbringing that Marci has given her time, talent and treasure to multiple organizations and specifically to South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF).

Marci recalls her father, a former recipient of a $50 football scholarship from the South Dakota School of Mines, diligently giving back that same amount annually, even when finances were limited. “That money, given by someone they didn’t know, changed the trajectory of their lives,” Marci shared. This deeply rooted value of philanthropy laid the foundation for her commitment to giving back.

Professionally, Marci’s career in broadcast journalism allowed her to witness both the triumphs and challenges of South Dakota communities. From standing atop Mount Rushmore reporting on a geological study to covering critical social issues, her work highlighted the state's unique spirit of collaboration and resilience. “In South Dakota, we may be separated by miles, but we are all neighbors,” she reflected. This perspective shaped her understanding of philanthropy's vital role in addressing community challenges and supporting solutions.

Marci’s involvement with South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) is driven by her admiration for its innovative approach to philanthropy. She praises initiatives like Community Savings Accounts for empowering donors of all capacities to create meaningful impact. As a member of SDCF’s Grantmaking Committee, Marci values the organization’s strategic focus on pressing issues like affordable housing, childcare and workforce development. “With its managed assets, SDCF has a big-picture view to leverage public and philanthropic dollars best,” she explained.

Looking to the future, Marci encourages potential donors to view SDCF as a partner in achieving their philanthropic goals. “It’s not just about giving,” she emphasizes, “it’s about working with some of the best professionals in the state to create lasting impact, often extending beyond a single lifetime.”

Through her leadership and passion, Marci Burdick continues to make a profound impact, helping to ensure South Dakota’s communities thrive for generations to come.

SDCF is a public non-profit organization established in 1987. SDCF, with offices in Pierre, Rapid City, Sioux Falls and Aberdeen administers nearly 1,300 funds benefiting hundreds of charitable organizations annually. The Foundation distributed over $40 million in grants in 2024 which made a tremendous difference in communities statewide. This would not have been possible without the generosity of our donors.
