Selby Community Foundation Accepts $100,000 Challenge Match from Himrich Family Fund and SDCF
January 13, 2025 // Community Savings AccountSelby Community Foundation Advisory Council has accepted a challenge to raise $100,000 within three years for a match of $150,000 from the Oscar M. and Edna A. Himrich Family Fund and South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF), a $1.25 match.
Ruby (Himrich) Humphrey of Pierre, S.D. is offering the match in memory of her parents. “I’ve been looking for some time to find a way to help the Selby community. My parents grew up, lived and worked in Selby all their lives and I wanted to honor them in a lasting way.”
Recently, a group of Selby residents gathered to form Selby Community Foundation (SCF), one of 88 communities in partnership with South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF). Funds donated are invested with SDCF, and through continued community support, provides a perpetual funding source for scholarships, nonprofits, and charitable causes in the Selby area under recommendation of the local advisory council.
“Because of the generosity of the Himrich Family Fund and SDCF’s support, we are excited to move forward with raising $100,000 to create a legacy fund for the Selby area,” said Gene Miller, SCF Chairperson. “We encourage all community members to consider a donation. All the dollars raised here, stay here.”
A percentage of the funds’ value is made available annually for the local advisory council to distribute. As the fund grows, so does the annual amount available to give back to nonprofit groups and organizations making a difference.
“We are proud to provide support to South Dakota communities like Selby who strive to build a long-term asset for their area,” said Jamie Farmen, SDCF Community Development Coordinator. “Selby Community Foundation will provide a vehicle for current, past and future residents of this area to give back to their hometown.”

Edna Alvina Schneider, daughter of Katherine (Hauck) and Henry Schneider, was born August 29, 1916, North of Java, S.D. in Campbell County. She received her formal education at the Kundert School North of Java. As a young lady she enjoyed serving people at several area restaurants. She also performed domestic duties for several households in Selby.
Oscar and Edna made their home and farmed one half mile East of Selby for many years. Edna and Oscar were truly partners on the farm as she assisted him with the farming activities. They were long time members of the United Church of Christ and Oscar served as usher and church treasurer for many years. Edna is remembered as a great cook and an excellent hostess. At her home, the coffee pot was always on, and she was able to whip something up in minutes.
