A Lasting Legacy for Day County-Phyllis Hanse Estate Gift

Posted on

In June 2017, the Day County community announced they had received a $4.2 million estate gift from former piano teacher, Phyllis Hanse of Webster, South Dakota. The dollars are endowed with the South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) and will be distributed for high school scholarships, St. John’s Lutheran Church, city youth programs and the local library.

Ms. Hanse was an only child and did not have her own children but loved her piano students. She was always present at Webster sporting events and high school activities.

Through SDCF, Ms. Hanse was able to provide a long-term funding source to the community, charities and nonprofits she cared about most. Her gift will benefit the Day County community for years to come and she will be remembered for generations.

Tom Sannes, Webster attorney, set up the endowment funds for Ms. Hanse’s estate. “It’s an amazing gift. It’s going to be a game-changer in the community for decades to come.”
