The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) presented a $10,000 South Dakota Fund grant to the Brookings County Youth Mentoring Program (BCYMP).  Funds will provide partial support for expansion of their youth mentor volunteer program.

“The broad benefits are well-established, and one-on-one youth mentoring programs like Brookings County Youth Mentoring Program can change lives and communities for generations”, said Darla Biel, Executive Director, BCYMP.  “This generous support from the South Dakota Community Foundation will allow us to add more BCYMP Mentors for K-12 students in Brookings County. I’m grateful on behalf of BCYMP, but also on behalf of all of us.”

The Brookings County Youth Mentoring Program will add 60 new mentor volunteers in 2019. Research shows that one-on-one community-based mentoring programs help break cycles of poverty and have a beneficial effect on depressive symptoms. Of all the K-12 students in Brookings County, over 4,700 youth are eligible for this program.

“The South Dakota Community Foundation is proud to partner with the Brookings County Youth Mentoring Program as they strive to expand their program”, said Ginger Niemann, SDCF Senior Program Officer. “These funds will help them serve approximately 70% more youth than they were previously able to help.”

The South Dakota Fund is an unrestricted fund that makes grants in support of culture, economic development, education, health and human services.
