Fairy Godmother’s Fund
The Fairy Godmother Fund was the first “Field of Interest Fund” established under the South Dakota Community Foundation. It was created to improve the health and well-being of South Dakota women with limited resources. Assistance is available for immediate, short-term, critical needs that can't be met by traditional funding options. There are no grant applications, no long forms or dense financial paperwork to fill out. The following examples have all received funding from the Fairy Godmother’s Fund:
- A mother of 6 children with a number of chronic health issues, including being on dialysis 3 days a week, was awarded funds to assist with car repairs to enable her to get to her appointments.
- An award was given to a woman to receive transportation costs to receive medical care at an Indian Health Services Hospital several miles away from home.
- A young mother of two who endured severe physical, mental and financial abuse from her husband found refuge at a Women’s Shelter. Funds assisted her with acquiring housing.
Our advisory council of women throughout the state works to ensure the funds are directly paid to benefit women’s needs throughout the year. These ladies volunteer their time to support a cause they believe is important to our state. They are:
Beth Benning - Spearfish
Jan DeBerg - Watertown
Glenna Fouberg - Aberdeen
Marilyn Grossenburg - Winner
Jean Koehler - Mitchell
Amy Mickelson - Sioux Falls
Peg Seljeskog - Rapid City
Through your contribution to The Fairy Godmother’s Fund, you can leave a legacy to women of South Dakota. With your involvement, this can be a never-ending story of people helping people. First time contributors of $100 or more will receive a “Fairy Godmother” lapel pin that can be worn to spark interest among other women.
