Housing Opportunities in Huron
The South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF) presented a $10,000 Community Innovation Grant (CIG) to the Huron Housing Authority. Offered in partnership with the Bush Foundation, the Community Innovation Grant program supports efforts to find breakthrough solutions to community challenges across the state. The grant will help them begin to address challenges identified within Huron’s housing market.
“With the addition of the grant from the South Dakota Community Foundation, this project represents community-wide collaboration to improve housing in Huron”, said Andrea Del Grosso, Executive Director, Huron Housing Authority. “This Community Innovation Grant and the support of our local partners will help us establish innovative and sustainable programs that will have meaningful impact on the condition of Huron’s current housing stock. We believe this will lead to neighborhood revitalization and ultimately increase our community’s expectations for housing opportunities in the future.”
The need and community demand for housing rehab activities were identified through a public event called “Huron Rising – Reimagine our Future” sponsored by the Huron Community Foundation. As a result, an ad hoc “Housing Committee” was formed. Through a year-long collaboration, they identified essential functions and activities they felt were crucial in addressing conditions that currently exist in Huron’s housing market.
“The South Dakota Community Foundation is pleased to partner with the Huron Housing Authority as they work to address housing concerns in their community”, said Ginger Niemann, SDCF Senior Program Officer. “Many South Dakota communities are struggling as they strive to provide safe and affordable living spaces for their citizens. We applaud the Housing Authority’s efforts to be pro-active in addressing these challenges.”
A total of $400,000 will be available to nonprofits in 2020 through the Community Innovation Grant program.
