Kimball Area Foundation hosts Keeping it in Kimball event

In 2016, the Kimball Economic Development Corporation and a group of Kimball residents gathered to form the Kimball Area Foundation, one of 78 communities to have a community savings account (CSA) with the South Dakota Community Foundation (SDCF). The CSA is an SDCF endowment fund that is invested and through community support, will provide a perpetual funding source for nonprofits and charitable causes in the Kimball community.

In September 2016, the Kimball Area Foundation accepted a challenge grant from SDCF to raise $100,000 by September 2018 for $25,000 from SDCF. In efforts to raise awareness regarding the local CSA and reach the challenge grant goal, the Kimball Economic Development board and its Director, Anita Holan, organized "Keeping it in Kimball" with the goal of raising funds and awareness for the Kimball Area Foundation on Saturday, June 24 this year.

“Having a Foundation for the Kimball area is so important,” said Holan. “All the dollars raised here will stay here.”

The event included a honey bee pageant, bed races, Ag Olympics, a dance, a community supper, local musicians and a couple of book signings by the authors. The event raised over $7,000. This year's event was a great start to raise awareness for their local CSA, but the area has a ways to go to reach their goal of a $100,000 endowment. The board is planning additional events this coming winter.

Donations to the Kimball Area Foundation will be invested along with other SDCF endowed funds. In the future, a percentage of the Kimball Area Foundation’s fund value will be made available for a local board of directors to distribute.  As the fund grows so will the annual amount available to give back to nonprofit groups and organizations making a difference locally.
